un homme mange

By Tara Zandra | February 18, 2009

Tabitha’s French program arrived on Monday (apparently UPS does not take off President’s Day). I call it her program but I decided to use it as well. Turns out her French-Canadian heritage works in her favor as her pronunciation is far superior to mine. I can’t even pass one oral exercise and I’m only on day 2! But it’s fun and Tabitha is enjoying the heck out of it, of course. For those that didn’t take French in highschool, or simply forgot it all, much like my Spanish, the title of my post says “the man eats.” It’s a phrase we’ve worked on.

Today being Wednesday means no classes so we get a lot done at home. Besides French, Tabitha did math, violin, music theory (that’s a new thing we just started), grammar, sewing, ancient history, a bit of language arts and cooking. She was in charge of the entree this evening and made baked macaroni and cheese. I have to supervise her since there is knife work involved and she can’t lift the big pot of pasta and drain it. But I talked to her about how the sauce is versitile and it just depends on what you use to flavor it. In this case it was cheddar cheese but I mentioned it could be cream instead of milk, lemon instead of cheese, shallots instead of onion and so forth. Anyone can cook from a recipe but I want her to be able to cook with her mind, heart and tastebuds.

Daisy and I played a new card game I picked up at Target based on Eric Carle’s Very Hungry Caterpillar. It was slightly tedious but I think it will be better when we play with others. I’m sure we can get Tabi to play with us next time. I also bought Daisy her own Literature Pocket like Tabitha does for history. It’s based on Nursery Rhymes and she certainly enjoyed doing a book like Tabitha. We worked on the first pocket today which included making a bird hand puppet so that was quite the hit. Daisy was in charge of dessert tonight and she made chocolate pudding. I’ll admit we cheated and did it in the microwave. I wanted to use my batter bowl since it has a pour spout and we can’t use it on the stove. Next time we’re going to make chocolate banana cream pie. Daisy also read today but did so in the evening because she specifically wanted to read to Chris. We hit a bit of a slow down because she was getting frustrated again. But I think we’ve worked through that and now only have 4 more reading sessions. I’ll take her to the store and make a big deal out of getting the new books, I think she’ll like that.

Of course the whole day wasn’t lessons, they both played on their own and also spent time playing together as well as painting on the new easel and this evening we finally watched the last episode of The Superstars of Dance. Chris is now watching Lost as usual and I’m going to hang out on Facebook for a little while I think.

I know I still need to do pictures and also mention Daisy’s party. In a nutshell, it went well :) May birthday season rest in peace. I’m done.

I love how you are teaching them to cook as well. I haven’t done much with Gabe on that front - his culinary skills stop at PB&J or a cheese sandwich. ; )
I never took French, I had 3 years of Spanish & recall only a few words along with the phrase “Un momento por favor” - LOL!
