Christmas Meme

By Tara Zandra | December 9, 2008

Saw this over at Mel’s and felt like adding it here.

1. Wrapping paper or gift bags? Definitely wrapping paper. I only use a gift bag if it is an unwrappable item. Even then I’ll usually give it a good go.

2. Real tree or Artificial? I can go either way. Last year was the first time in maybe 5 years that we bought a real tree and we loved it so we’ll be doing that again this year. But we have 3 smaller artificial trees that I love having up for the whole month.

3. When do you put up the tree? Decorations go up no earlier than December 1 out of deference to Chris’s birthday the day before. Our artificial trees go up at the same time. Since we’re also buying a real tree this year, we’ll get that about 10 days before Christmas. Enough time to enjoy it, but not quite enough time for it to completely dry out.

4. When do you take the tree down? All decorations must be put away by New Year’s Day. My motto is “I will not have last year’s holiday hanging over the new year.”

5. Do you like eggnog? Honestly, I have never tried it in my life.

6. Favorite gift received as a child? Sad to say, I can’t recall a favorite. Good thing my mom doesn’t read this, lol. I do know that one year I received a shopping cart which is exactly what I had wanted and in the front basket was a porcelain doll which is also what I wanted. I guess that must have been my favorite since it’s the only one I distinctly remember. I can even picture how it looked in front of the Christmas tree at the first apartment I lived in. This would have been when I was 4, 5, or 6. Probably not 5 because I’m pretty sure I got a bike that year, but I could be wrong.

7. Hardest person to buy for? My in-laws. But they would probably say the same about me :)

8. Easiest person to buy for? The kids, obviously. I know just what they want and what I want them to have. Chris is fairly easy too, except I use my good ideas for his birthday and then don’t know what to get him for Christmas.

9. Do you have a nativity scene? I do. Two if you count the Little People version. But I have one that I took from my mom’s house when I moved out. Though that aspect of Christmas is not what we celebrate, it’s a piece of my childhood and belongs out for Christmas.

10. Mail or email Christmas cards? Definitely mail. I’ll be working on that next week.

11. Worst Christmas gift you ever received? A cross necklace when I was 18. Not only am I not religious, but what little religious upbringing I have, a cross is a big no-no, so it was doubly inappropriate.

12. Favorite Christmas Movie? I dont’ think I have one.

13. When do you start shopping for Christmas? July!

14. Have you ever recycled a Christmas present? In thinking about this I’m pretty sure I never have. If I, or my kids, get something I don’t like, I just give it to Goodwill. I have no reason to pass it off on someone else.

15. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas? Again with the favorites! Christmas Eve I eat whatever my MIL serves at her house. It’s a party so lots of food to choose from and all buffet style as opposed to a formal meal. Christmas Day we do cinnamon buns after stockings but before presents. For the afternoon meal, we’ve been doing simple [vegetarian] cold cuts and relish trays.

16. What decorations are on your tree? I would have to say there is an abundance of Disney ornaments. We also have lots of personalized ones because we get new ones every year. Then there are some that were made by my Great-Grandmother and a few from when I was little and had my own small tree in my room. I also have one tree that is entirely gingerbread ornaments in my kitchen.

17. Favorite Christmas song? Carol of the Bells.

18. Travel at Christmas or stay at home? We stay home for the most part but do go out to my in-laws in the late morning. But it’s 10-minutes away, hardly traveling in the true sense. Next year we’ll be going on a trip which should be interesting. I’ve only ever not been at home for Christmas once in my life when I was 10. But I’ll be with family so it should all be good.

19. Can you name all of Santa’s reindeer? Dasher, Dancer, Donner, Blitzen, Cupid, Comet, Prancer and Vixen. Oh, and Rudolph.

20. Angel on top of tree or star? Star, I’m not really into angels.

21. Open the presents Christmas Eve or Christmas morning? Definitely Christmas morning! On Christmas Eve, the kids get to open one gift from me and Chris. But it’s always Christmas PJs, and they know that. It’s a tradition my mom started with me and I love it.

22. Most annoying thing about this time of the year? So much fun stuff to do and it would really be better if Chris had the whole month off so we could do it all!

23. What theme or color are you using when you decorate? I love gingerbread items and really gravitate towards those type of decorations. However, we have plenty of other decorations as well.

24. Favorite for Christmas dinner? I think I explained the food pretty well already.

25. What do you want for Christmas this year? All I want is for my kids to have a fabulous Christmas season. I work hard to not make it all about the one day and we try to do something each day that has to do with Christmas. As far as gifts go, I’m a shopper and the gift of shopping is always the best for me. Amazon, itunes, barnes and noble, target, ikea, gap- those are all places where gift cards are appreciated. But I don’t *need* anything, you know? I don’t even really want anything. I just want for my kids, not for myself.
