weekend update

By Tara Zandra | December 8, 2008

Saturday was a day of girls. Tabitha and I headed bright and early to a nature Girl Scouting event. I was one of the chaperones so stayed for the whole event. I usually stay anyway, it’s just different having to constantly do a head count. The girls all seemed to have a good time and I enjoyed talking with my friend while watching the girls. At the end they gave each troop a box of Girl Scout cookies and we managed to get my favorites- Tagalongs! Those were two fabulous cookies that really hit the spot.

After the event, Tabitha and I, along with a friend of Tabi’s, went home and I fed the girls lunch then they were able to play for about half an hour before it was time for our American Girl book club meeting / holiday party. The last American Girl books we read were of the Samantha character and she’s one of the ones with a movie which happens to be a holiday movie. So it was quite fortuitous timing to watch it and make the meeting a holiday party as well.

First they all gathered together to sing Christmas Carols. I cheat and just plop in one of the Disney Sing-along videos but it works so well because the words are on the screen for them. By the way, no one should have to suffer through the rendition of “Silent Night” that I was lucky enough to hear on Saturday. Woo-boy! Those were some notes those girls mangled hit.

After the singing, they decorated gingerbread men cakelets. That’s what William-Sonoma calls the pan I bought- cakelets. Basically they are shaped cupcakes as opposed to round and in paper cups. After the decorating was the eating of said gingerbread and then we put the Samantha movie on. What I love about the movie meetings is I get to spend the whole time talking with my friend who stays for the meetings since it’s a long drive for her to just drop off her daughter. So that was what I call a very good time.

The movie ended with about a half hour before parents would pick up so I put on some lively Brain Setzer Orchestra Christmas music and told them to dance. I did not tell them to scream and squeal with their high-pitched voices, but they did anyway.

Then they all left and I felt like collapsing. I don’t know why it took so much out of me, I really did sit for most of it, but being a hostess just wears me out for some reason. As soon as they were all gone, I fixed a quickie dinner for the fam and then hopped into a scorching hot bath with a good Agatha Christie book.

After I got Daisy to bed I asked Chris to rub my feet and promptly fell asleep on the couch. Again, not quite sure why I was so wiped out, I guess it had just been long day or something.

Sunday morning was spent fairly lazily. Eventually we got a move on and Chris and I took the kids to his parents so we could test drive 3 more cars. Our first stop was Nissan to try out the Rogue. It was wonderful and we couldn’t find anything wrong with it at all. Next we went to Jeep to try the Compass. We ran into quite the snag here in that they apparently had only two 08s and no 09s. Fine, but they seemed to get hung up on us trying a particular 08 and they couldn’t find the keys. They mentioned 3 times that they had another 08 upstairs so I’m really not sure why they didn’t just bring that one down. It was cold and we were just left standing around and from what we saw of the Compass (we were able to get inside, just not start the car) it didn’t really measure up to the Rogue. So after maybe 10 or 15 minutes we simply left. On to the Scion dealership. We tested the Scion XB which was okay. Basically we both wanted to like it, but it kind of fell short. In the end, we’re putting the Rogue in the number 1 spot with the Pontiac Vibe second and lastly the Scion. We’re a few weeks away from buying yet but it feels good to have that aspect figured out.

We ended the day at a Mexican restaurant with my in-laws before heading home.

I don’t know if you remember me from Just 4 wives, but I still enjoy following your blog. Your girls are so adorable. :) Anyway, are you planning on buying new? I work for an automotive supplier here in Detroit and we get GM employee discounts. I just got an email that says, “Share your employee discount with 2 friends.” Let me know if you’re interested in a discout on the Vibe, and email me back.
