not what you’d hope for

By Tara Zandra | October 29, 2007

So my car basically had a near-death experience. The timing belt snapped and that caused the rest of the engine to go ka-blooey. You know it’s bad when the mechanic calls you down to talk to you in person instead of over the phone. For awhile there it was looking really grim as to whether or not it was even going to be worth saving. We thought we had an estimate, then there was another phone call asking Chris to come down there and talk to them again. At that point the numbers they were saying were going really close to the amount we paid for the car to begin with. There really didn’t seem to be any point in pouring that kind of money into it. But the owner got more of his guys to look at it and in the end it was determined that it can be saved and the amount is the original number they gave us. I’ll get it back sometime later this week.

In the meantime we took a good long look at our planned vacation. The plane tickets are bought and none of us wants to cancel. But the hotel we were going to stay at was one of the highest priced hotels in Disney World. We decided to let it go and use our vacation money to take care of other debts, including this new for the car. So we downgraded our resort and we’re going back to Pop Century where we stayed last year. Yes we’re a little disappointed, but at the same time it’s a bit freeing to no long have to pay for our hotel room. Our initial deposit from the Polynesian is only $39 shy of our entire week stay at Pop Century. So we owe almost nothing for our room to be paid for. And now we’re going to plan another vacation to stay at the Poly so we’ll still stay there, just a little later than planned.

In the end, I do dearly love my car and don’t want another one. My feelings have been all over the place since that heart-stopping moment Saturday night when it wouldn’t start. I’m ready to really think it’s going to be okay, but there’s always that nagging feeling that something else will go wrong. We still need to take Chris’s car in because the brakes are making an odd sound. I’m afraid to find out what that is.

Aww! That’s a bummer about having to downgrade, although at least you do still get to go. Hope your car and Chris’s car both come out OK.
