social needs

By Tara Zandra | October 5, 2007

Today is our Park Day which I actually look forward to each week. Tabitha has always been a high social needs child so our group is wonderful for her. She likes playing with just one or two kids, but she really prefers a large gathering. Daisy, on the other hand, doesn’t have a good time at all. She wants me to push her in the swings and that’s it. Ocassionally she will go with Tabitha’s group, but she comes right back to me as soon as possible. The child actually said this morning “I don’t want to play with other kids, I don’t need anyone.” Strong words for a two year old. And I completely understand her feelings. I have never been social and when I’d be taken to the park or the complex pool, I would hope with all my might that no other kids would be there. I *liked* playing by myself which was good since I was an only child for so long.

But I do enjoy one-on-one conversations so I try to squeeze those in between swing pushes. Daisy just isn’t at that point herself yet, I assume she’ll be more the one or two close friends type of person as opposed to the center of attention of 25 kids. We go because it is extremely important for Tabitha’s well-being, but we left after an hour and a half because of Daisy’s desperate “I just want to go home” plea. It’s very hard to keep a balance with such opposite children. Thank goodness they love playing together. I’ve been listening to them for the last half hour and it is truly wonderful.

We’ve got that going on over here, except Gillian is like Tabitha and I’m like Daisy. I am and always have been the “few close friends” type, whereas she’s the “millions of friends” type and loves big parties and packed playgrounds. (Although you’d never have known it when she was 3 and afraid of everything, haha.)
