Turning 10

By Tara Zandra | February 2, 2009

Well that was a fun-filled 10th birthday for Tabitha.

Chris went to work Friday as usual but the festivities still started that morning. Tabitha was greeted by a nice set-up on the table and one wrapped present. We had told her no presents until the evening so Chris could be there as well but this gift was a shirt I made for her to wear on her birthday. I embellished a pink shirt with rhinestones to make the number 10 and put a crown over the zero. Tabitha really liked it and I was particularly proud when she asked me where I bought it and was rather surprised I did it myself. Next we went off to Park Day and I brought Brownie Bites and grapes to share with our friends. We stayed about an hour and a half and then came home for lunch.

After our meal it was off to Disneyland! Their theme this year is “Celebrating” and are offering free entrance on your birthday. However, if you already have a ticker or an annual pass, they give you an alternative gift in the form of a gift card worth one day’s admission. So when we arrived at Disneyland we had to stand in quite the line to get Tabitha’s gift card. Then the three of us went into California Adventure, per Tabi’s request, and into Redwood Creek Challenge Trail. There the girls climbed explored and stomped in water puddles and had a grand time. At this point Chris called us to say he was there and we went off to meet him.

This is where the good part comes in because up until now, everything is just a normal birthday. But this year we had a surprise- an overnight stay at the Disneyland Hotel! When we met Chris he told Tabitha we were going to walk on a little trail. When we came to the end of the trail, which was in front of one of the towers, he presented Tabitha with her room key. She was thrilled and there were tears in her eyes and the other people in the lobby were watching her and smiling. Then Daisy cracked us all up by asking if we were going to live there forever, lol.

We went up to our room and Tabitha was greeted with the sight of all her presents arranged on the bed along with Lindsay and also balloons from the hotel. Tabitha opened up her gifts from us and Daisy and then we left to head into Disneyland.

First stop was dinner which took some doing due to misinformation given to us by the information cast member. After dinner we went into the Star Wars shop where Tabitha used her gift card on a build your own light saber. She decided to complete the look with a Jedi robe. She also had a 20% off coupon for renewing her annual pass so those two items didn’t completely wipe out her gift card (though they came close). Next we all rode Finding Nemo Submarines and then we went to the candy store on Main Street so Tabitha could get half a yard of colored sugar. Oh, they give it a cute name and call it “Sandy Candy” but it’s basically a build your own pixie stick. At this point it was an hour past Daisy’s bed time so I bundled her in her stroller and took her for a long walk while Chris took Tabitha onto Star Tours. I did a little shopping in Toon Town for Daisy’s upcoming birthday and then went to meet Chris and Tabi on Main Street. The girls and I went to our room while Chris went to the parking structure so he could move my car to the hotel. Daisy stayed asleep the whole time and I put her into bed clothes and all. Once we got Tabitha to bed as well, Chris and I did our usually hotel thing and sat in the bathroom talking while Tabitha fell asleep. At least this bathroom was much bigger than the one at Motel 6 in Big Bear.

Saturday morning we got up bright and early. As in the 6 o’ clock hour. Not sure why, other than me as I slept so horribly that it was a blessing to see the sun come up. But the advantage to all of us being up early was we had a leisurely couple of hours and enjoyed muffins before packing and heading into Disneyland for the day.

Tabitha chose to ride Astro Orbiter first and then we spent the day riding what she wanted to ride. We left around 2:00pm as we were pretty partied out. We spent the rest of the evening taking it easy.

Sunday was the last of Tabitha’s birthday celebration. She had asked me awhile ago if I would take her to American Girl place for her 10th birthday. I agreed but what she didn’t know was that I invited her best friend to go with us. She was thrilled! Tabitha and her friend first took their dolls to the salon to get their ears pierced. Next they looked around the store for awhile compiling mental lists of what they would use their spending money on. We then went to check-in for lunch at the café and while we waited to be seated my friend and I took pictures of our girls together. Then it was in to lunch which was delicious. It started out with cinnamon buns, then an appetizer of individual baked potatoes, fruite kabobs, sourdough bread, and veggies and dip. Next was the entrees, Tabitha had raddiatorre vegetable pasta and I had a roasted vegetable salad. Yum! Dessert came next in the form of a cake I had ordered for the girls. It was beautiful and they blew out the candles together.

After all the food was done it was time for shopping. Tabitha had a gift certificate from my MIL and one of her presents from us was the promise of picking out a bed for Lindsay. So I bought the bed and Tabitha used her certificate on four new outfits for Lindsay. I also picked up a ballet wrap for Daisy. We were finally done with all the pinkness and headed out. The girls sat together for a little while longer and then we parted ways. Oh! Not before I fell in love with a rhinestone shirt for Miss Daisy. It has a guitar and says “Little Sisters Rock” on the front. Too cute!

That would be the end of Tabitha’s 10th birthday celebration, though we all went out as a family yesterday afternoon. Just a few errands- Barnes and Noble, Target, Henry’s, Party City and Jamba Juice. Last night was again spent not doing much of anything.

Today and tomorrow are normal then we celebrate Daisy’s birthday on Wednesday! I’m working on a special outfit for her too, but need today’s mail to bring me something.
