12, Oceans, Egypt, Candy, Fair, Matter

By Tara Zandra | July 28, 2008

Yesterday was our 12th anniversary. We went out in the evening for dinner at PF Chang’s. My mother had given us a gift card there since I enjoyed it so much last month and wanted to take Chris there. He loved it as much as I did and we had a great dinner. We had potstickers and lettuce wraps for appetizers, two of my favorites that I haven’t had in years and years because most places serve them with meat. I will be back, that’s for sure. After dinner, we went to Coldstone to use another gift card my mom gave us. We’ll get a lot of use out of that card because my MIL had bought Coldstone coupons for a fundraiser a few weeks ago and gave them to us so they’ll stretch the gift card out a while. Then we went to California Adventure for a couple hours. We rode Tower of Terror as it’s one of my favs but Tabitha won’t ride it so I rarely get to ride. It was just as fun as always :) Then Chris and I got in line for the new Toy Story ride since I also love that one. By then California Adventure was closed and we didn’t feel like fighting the huge crowd going into Disneyland. So we browsed the giant World of Disney store in it’s entirety and then headed to the car. We were home early-ish, but that’s okay since both my mom and Chris had to get up and go to work today. Chris and I had a really nice time and it was a good way to celebrate 12 years.

Before dance class this morning, the girls and I started our ocean study today. The real draw for the kids will be working on the ocean mural. I had them each create their own fish. Tabitha got rather creative with hers. Daisy is capable, but wasn’t really in the mood so I drew an outline for her and she colored it just a bit before declaring herself done. I need to get paper to cover the cabinet and then they can start painting. I’ll also need to stock up on various blue paints and also sponges so I’m thinking a trip to Lakeshore learning may be in store for us later this week.

After lunch, I did lessons with Tabitha and I’m happy to report we are now only one pocket away from being done with Egypt. We should finish the other pocket tomorrow and then Wed. I want to re-read the chapter in Story of the World and have Tabitha take the chapter test and then we can finally move on. It has certainly been interesting, I can say that. What I found particularly interesting is how much has “changed” since I was taught this stuff as a kid. I know I was taught that slaves built the pyramids and there when a pyramid was almost finished, two slaves would seal it off from the inside. Essentially they were sentanced to die. Not only is there zero mention of that in any of our studies these past few months, but apparently, it is now widely acknowledged that slaves did not build the pyramids and it could actually be a highly regarded job to build a pyramid for a pharaoh. I guess I never needed to learn this stuff all those years ago since it was wrong anyway, lol. By the time Daisy is studying Egypt, I would love to actually travel to the Valley of the Kings. But that’s a bit of a dream that would take some serious planning and I think some luck as well :)

Daisy did read to me a little bit but mainly we played never-ending rounds of Candyland. I introduced her to the computer version and that kid was in heaven! She tends to play the mini games more than the board game aspect of it and laughs hysterically whenever the whale eats her ice cream sundae. The next time I give her computer time I’m going to show her Chutes and Ladders and see how she likes that.

After dinner, Chris and Tabitha sat down with the competition information for this year’s county fair. Tabitha has ideas of things she thinks she can do but doesn’t take into the account the reality of turning in everything in three weeks. So the two of them came up with realistic goals. Daisy will be able to enter two competitions; a coloring contest and a decorating contest. The decorating contest is an outline of a butterfly and you can use anything you want to decorate it. Daisy has decided on spaghetti and puff balls. You’re not supposed to us food though, so I’m unsure if dry pasta is okay or not. She’ll be positively thrilled to see her stuff on display at the fair and I’m sure she’ll get some kind of ribbon even if it’s participatory.

Tabitha and I also did a few experiments this evening dealing with matter. Mainly we compared differences in solids, liquids and gases. We have a Chemistry Science Wiz kit they sell at Target. So far I think it’s pretty good for quick and easy learning. It’s ages 5-10 so some of the writing is a bit childish but overall I do think it gets the point across. Of course, we’re only a few pages in so it’s not fully evaluated yet. I only mention details such as these for other homeschoolers who read my blog and may find the info helpful.

Happy 12th Anniversary! Sounds like a great one! mmmmm…PF Chang’s and their yummy lettuce wraps…they are soooo good. I found another restaurant here that offers them with tofu called Happy Sumo which is a chain but not sure where else they are located.
