american girl and troy

By Tara Zandra | June 8, 2008

Yesterday was our second meeting of the American Girl book club. This time we read the Felicity books- she is a colonial girl in Virginia just before the American Revolution. First we had our discussion and in some ways I feel I dropped the ball. I really didn’t enjoy the book that was the focus of our discussion and kind of thought it would be easy to discuss. Though it certainly was, I don’t feel the discussion had any depth. I must prepare better next time. But activities were well planned and went over quite well. The girls made their own samplers on the computer to print out, they wrote with a quill dipped in ink (our trip to Disney World came in handy as we had happened to purchase a set in Epcot), they learned a simple minuet and danced to a Mozart minuet I downloaded, they played with a bilboquet, attempted a proper tea party lesson, and practiced drum beats that were used among the colonies’ soldiers. Amongst themselves the girls decided to fill their free time with role playing scenes from the books. I would definitely call this second meeting a sucess- but now I need to start working on the next meeting!

As per our norm, Chris and I have had the same movie from Netflix for three months. So last night we got both kids in bed at a decent time and finally sat down to watch Troy. I haven’t read Greek mythology or Greek history in forever, so I honestly didn’t know how the movie was going to end- well, I knew how it was going to end for Troy itself, but not for the characters. Brad Pitt was looking especially purty so that’s always a treat, though I can’t watch him in movie nowadays without thinking to myself whether it was filmed before or after she left my girl-crush Jennifer Aniston. Regardless of all that, I did think the movie was interesting and enjoyed it. I spent a little bit of time on Wikipedia today reading about Helen of Troy and I’d like to read a bit more about Achilles and the Trojan War. I think after Tabi and I are finally able to leave Ancient Egypt in our History lessons that we’ll be going on to Ancient Greece so my interest should continue for awhile.

Today we all went to the mall for just a little bit. I found some fabulous new kid clothes at Gap Kids, but didn’t get anything yet. I want to think on it because neither of my girls needs anything really. Daisy fell asleep on the way home so while she napped Tabitha was in the play room and Chris and I played Roller Coaster Tycoon 3. Then Tabs and I went out to the fabric store and grocery store. I found the fabric I was looking for to make a dress for Tabitha to wear to her flying up ceremony in Girl Scouts. Her American Girl doll will have a matching skirt. It’ll will be super easy and a nice summer dress for her to wear any time. This afternoon I actually did some sewing and was glad to finish one project. I have three more waiting for me and then I’ll go back to scrapbooking for a few weeks. So far this back and forth is working for me in that I feel like I’m getting stuff accomplished in my hobbies.

And now I’m off to make everyone’s favorite pasta salad for dinner.

Hmmm… I haven’t been much of a Pitt fan since he left Jennifer & subsequently ruined *my* girl crush, Angelina Jolie! Odd, isn’t it?

The American Girl book club seems like a hit for the girls - glad it worked out.

There are so many pasta salads out there - if you don’t mind sharing…what do you make that is your family’s fave?!
