Rock on

By Tara Zandra | April 6, 2006

Miss Daisy has always shown quite the fondness for music, unless I’m singing to her, of course. Nowadays, she does actually tolerate that, but since she was a newborn she has enjoyed recorded music, especially something with a beat, which means she really enjoys hip-hop, much to my chagrin.

In the car on this fine evening she was rocking out to White Stripes, danced (in her carseat of course) to some Wiggles, sang along with the guitar solo of Lonely Day by System of a Down, protested Lost Cause by Beck and clapped the beat to Picture by Kid Rock and Sheryl Crow.

If she’s upset to the point where she’s crying, we can quiet her instantly by playing Mahna Mahna which is a Sesame Street song, but our version is by Cake. In a pinch we can sing it to her which also works. The song that she asks for repeatedly is Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes by, well, she’s not picky on that one. We have a recording of the Wiggles doing it, we can sing it to her or she’ll just push the hand of her singing puppy to get it to play. She absolutely loves singing and dancing that song.

She sings constantly and it’s so sweet to hear her because she sings with a high pitched voice as opposed to her regular deep voice. Oh, she’s not singing actual words, mind you, just kind of singing in Daisy-speak which at times sounds like a cross between Hebrew and Mandarin. Rarely does it sound like English, even when she’s honestly speaking to us. But her singing, is just the sweetest thing and I hope she never stops.
