the magic of reading

By Tara Zandra | March 24, 2008

It is so amazing watching Daisy learning to read. It’s been a long time since I’ve done this with Tabitha and it’s fun to do it again. She’s really getting it and our reading lessons are going wonderfully. Since I’m working without books right now, what I’m doing is starting with one short vowel word and having her sound that out. Then I give her another word with a different short vowel sound. Then I put together a 3 word sentence for her to read such as “A red bat.” She’s also recognizing the word she just sounded out and realizes it’s the same word and doesn’t need to sound it out again. Today I even erased the word and then wrote the sentence and she saw the word “red” and said it was the same we just did so I’m happy to see that progress. I think tomorrow I will work on the word “the” with her. I think in another week we’ll start using Bob books simply because I run out of ideas for sentences, lol.

This morning we met friends at a park which was a lovely way to spend the morning. The weather was simply gorgeous and I love talking with this friend and I had a large diet coke so everything was good :) Since we’ve been home I’ve been alternating the girls on lessons because it’s just too hard to do them at the same time. I’ve tried and I’ve tried but the little one gets very demanding for my attention and the big one gets extremely distracted, because Daisy’s pretty darn cute and funny, so today I decided to split them up. So far it’s going good. I’m also throwing in play together time for them both in between their turns with me and that gives me a few 15 minute breathers. We started so late in the day today so Tabitha and I will also work after dinner but that’s Daddy/Daisy time anyway so it all works out.
