where did the time go?

By Tara Zandra | May 29, 2007

This weekend went too fast which means you know it was good. We had a play date, Tabitha was in a Memorial Day parade, we had a lovely visit and lunch out with my mother, Chris and I watched Night at the Museum (really cute and fun), and we tried something new: letterboxing.

Letterboxing is similar to geo-caching, but you don’t need a GPS. We went to letterboxing.org and looked at a list of hidden boxes in our area. We chose two that were relatively close to each other, one had one hidden box the other had two. To find a box, you either have to follow clear instructions or decipher clues and/or code to get the directions. Inside a letterbox will be a stamp and stamp pad and a small notebook. We also brought our own stamp and notebook. So we stamp our notebook with the stamp from the hidden box and we stamp the box’s notebook with our stamp as well as write a little something. Usually the family stamp is designed and carved by the family or a special rubber stamp is bought that really represents the family. But we kind of decided Saturday night to go out Sunday and didn’t have that kind of time. We have a Disney alphabet stamp set and chose the letter A for Anc Fam. We will probably change our stamp in the future.

Anyway, the first box was hidden on a horse trail at a park so after we found the box the kids played at the park. There was a zip line and both kids loved going on it over and over again. Eventually we managed to tear them away and head off to our second location. This one was a walking path in what used to be a rural area with few houses but there is now plenty of development going on. That didn’t stop us from seeing llamas and goats though. We followed the directions, which were themed to Winnie the Pooh’s 100 Acre Wood, and found the two boxes. We had loads of fun, I had told the kids we were going adventuring and they liked that description. We cannot wait to go again as it’s a fabulous family activity and gets us outside. That afternoon Chris and I spent more time on letterboxing.org and deciphered a few codes for other boxes near us. Also, letterboxing will add an extra element of fun to any future driving trips we may take.

Thank you for posting about the letterboxing. It looks like a fun project for our family this summer.

I must say, letterboxing sounds intriguing. Think I may have to check it out with my fam.
