Weekend Rush

By Tara Zandra | January 29, 2007

Today we have nothing so I can take a minute to write about the past three days.

Friday was the first (Un)Official Homeschool Day at Disneyland. Chris took a vacation day so we could all go as a homeschooling family. Not many of our friends were there, but plenty of homeschoolers showed up. We all met at the castle at noon for a group picture.

It was a lot of fun and nice to continually be on the lookout for other homeschoolers.

That night at home I opened up a belated Christmas gift for Tabitha that was a kit for putting beads in hair. So I did all three of the other members of the Anc Fam.

Saturday morning Tabitha and I were off to a birthday party at Pump It Up. This was our first party there and it was loads of fun. Basically it’s a place with about 5 inflatable bouncers and/or slides in one room. The kids are let loose to sweat off 5 pounds for a little over an hour before moving into the party room for cake and presents. It’s not just for kids either, parents were playing and I went down the giant slide and also played in the inflated basketball court with Tabitha. Definitely a good time.

That’s brings us to Sunday of which I already mentioned it yesterday’s post. Tabitha was in her first violin recital and did beautifully. I know if you watch the video below you might think I’m just a deaf mother who feels her child does no wrong; but you have to understand that Tabitha has only been learning since April (and got off to a rocky start by having 3 different teachers in the first 4 months) and that she was extremely nervous. She makes small mistakes, of course, but sometimes when she would practice she would make 10 small mistakes and that adds up to not sounding good at all. But she pulled if off for the recital and only made the tiniest of mistakes (I didn’t even hear it and I’ve heard that song more times than I ever care to hear it again, lol) and most importantly, she felt great about her performance!

I love how the studio handled the fact that they have tons of students. Obviously making parents sit through hours and hours is not an option. So they break the day up into 3 sessions so you’re only there a little under 2 hours. I was hoping there would be variety, but the session we were in was all piano and violin. I wanted to see some of their other musicians and dancers and singers but they must have been other sessions. What they did, it seemed, was start with the least, hm, maybe experienced is the best word, and then progress to the better students who have obviously been playing for a few years. By the end, I must say, some of those kids were just amazing. One child even did her piano solo and then stood up and did a violin solo, and they were both great! For the record, Tabitha was the third violinist to perform out of 8 so yay for not being first!

And now today is my baby’s last day of being 7. Chris is home still on a mini-vacation until Wednesday. We’re not really doing anything, I want to do some painting, a couple spots in the entry way need a touchup and also I’m starting on the trim that extends into the hallway. Mainly we’ll all spend the day playing in various ways :)
