It’s a jungle in here

By Tara Zandra | February 12, 2011

Saturday was Daisy’s Jungle themed birthday party! She has a small guest list so we’re able to do a little more with decorations. We had inflatable monkeys and an inflatable palm tree. All Daisy wanted for this party was an inflatable palm tree- don’t ask me why. Everything looked really cute even if our palm tree was leaning over so far it looked like it was caught in a hurricane.

As each guest arrived we simply had them draw a jungle picture. We also had coloring sheets for early finishers. Next they girls took turns having their picture taken as a safari guide.

Next we sat them down for a game of Barrel of Monkeys which didn’t go off as well as I’d hoped. We assumed there would be some imaginary play involved but they all made a chain and declared themselves done. At this point we pulled out our back-up activity and boy was it a hit. We had 6 girls so we got them all jumping and I said the rhyme “6 little monkeys jumping on the bed.” Instead of saying 1 fell off, I said “Daisy fell off and bumped her head.” Then the child I called stepped out of the jumping circle and got to yell out the doctor’s lines. Let me tell you, these kids thought it was the best game in the world. I think we played 3 times and then I sat them all down to drink some water.

Hot Coconut was the game up next. Basically Hot Potato but with, you guessed it, a coconut. Tabitha was in charge of the music and would let it play forever. That will not be her job next time. They played 2 rounds since I had 2 prizes and enjoyed it rather well. We then took them outside for a piñata. Daisy got her 3 hits in with no issues, then she handed the bat off to someone else and on the first swing it broke from the rope. There was no way to repair it and string it up again so Chris chose to just hold it while children swung their bats. Crazy man, he is. Eventually everyone got a turn and it didn’t break so we had them grab the pull strings and that barely tore a small hole in it so Chris just shook it and rained candy down on the kids’ heads. They didn’t complain.

Back inside for cupcakes and presents then we handed out goody bags and sent everyone home.

I’d like to say that was the end of the day, but it wasn’t. Next we were off to take Tabitha to a birthday party. While she was there, Chris and I took Daisy to a play place. He and I discovered Monopoly on his phone so I enjoyed playing that- especially since I was winning!

Once we picked up Tabitha, we headed home and then Chris and I got ready because we had a surprise party to attend that night. 3 parties in one day for our family is insane! The party we attended was at my in-laws’ and not for kids so the girls got some nice Grandma time that evening. The party was catered by a restaurant we really like so dinner was great. One entrée was chili relleno which I don’t think we’ve ever eaten at the restaurant and it was so good. We most definitely will need to order that next time. We enjoyed the party which is kind of unusual for us so although it was a very full day, it was a lot of fun.
