Hidden Gems I

By Tara Zandra | January 18, 2011

Today I decided to add a new category to my blog called Home Tour. I make no promises of how often I’ll post in this category but I know that one thing blog readers love, it’s a peek inside someone’s home. I’m not up for a full tour of the house right now, so I’m starting with my own personal hidden gems. What a hidden gem means to me is something small in my home that makes me happy for whatever reason. Today I focused on our bedroom and found 3 things that make me smile.

This is behind my door. Why a mirror and ironing board? For years, we had an over-the-door ironing board. We didn’t iron very much and it suited our needs. Originally it was in the entry way on the inside of the closet door. But after we repainted that room, I didn’t want to put the board back up so it moved to the master bathroom door. It wasn’t that big of a deal until I started sewing. I was ironing all the time and it was usually yards of fabric. Plus, I have to iron most of the clothes I sew for the girls so I was using it a lot and it was in a terrible location; cramped and inconvenient. So sometime in the last year, I bought an ironing board on a whim and had Chris hang it for me. The mirror has a similar story in that it was something that just never got bought until one day last year I did for no reason at all. To have put off two such simple things is ridiculous, especially because they both make me happy that now I have them.

Another purchase on a whim- frankly, my next two items were as well. This switchplate was bought at anthropologie one day just for the heck of it. It’s different and I love the weathered look to it. I see it everytime I walk out of my room and smile.

My last spot I know I’ve shared in the past. The lamp hangs over our bed and we bought it at an Earth fair about 3 years ago. The sign was bought long enough ago that I no longer remember where. It’s on the wall above the head of the bed and seems a lovely phrase for an old married couple :)

I love that switchplate cover, and the lamp too, I remember seeing when you first got it.
