foggy now- hot later

By Tara Zandra | October 13, 2010

There is a heck of a lot of fog this morning and yet, the high today is 88. Tabitha will be quite disappointed as she is done wearing shorts and just wants to wear pants now. She says she likes them better which I can’t say I knew before this year. Daisy just wants dresses and hates when I put pants on her so warmer weather is easier for me with her.

I’m having a lazy morning because I want to. I’m letting Tabitha sleep in an extra hour because she was at the King’s game last night and didn’t get to bed until after 11. Chris and I then watched Glee so we also stayed up late and I admit I turned the alarm off this morning; that is, until my second alarm, Daisy, came and told me to get up. She didn’t even ask! And with all the fog, it’s been hard waking up because it seems so dark and early. I’ll be needing a few caffeine Diet Cokes today, methinks.

Yesterday we met friends at the Natural History Museum. They have a whole exhibit hall for California history so that was our goal. Tabitha took notes and pictures and will incorporate them into her history notebook. Sadly, or not, depending on how you look at it, they are currently redoing the whole Calfornia History section to be finished in 2012. That’s all well and good but one area was closed and it was the part about Los Angeles which is my favorite spot. They have a fabulous model of downtown that was made in 1940. We saw a museum worker meticulously cleaning the model yesterday. I guess we’ll just have to go back.

We visited a few other spots at the museum and then headed home before traffic kicked in. The kids did their own thing and then Chris came home and took Tabitha to dance and then they went straight to the game. Daisy made a diorama because when we were at the museum I explained all the little scenes she was looking at were called dioramas and they could be made at home with a shoe box. I did give her the idea of using her animals since she has a lot of them. She thought that was a fantastic idea and decorated the inside of the box and got out a ton of dinosaurs and animals and spent a long time talking to them telling the mammals they are not dinosaurs and vice versa. We visited the Hall of Mammals and I explained the fossils weren’t dinosaurs and gave her some mammal characteristics and I guess it stuck. Right now the animals are kind of arranged like in Lion King but with Woody (from Toy Story) lording over them so not sure on the current imaginary story-line.

Daisy came to be at 10-minutes of 7 and asked to go to bed. I stalled her with suggesting a bath so I managed to keep her up until 8:00pm. She told me this morning she had no trouble falling asleep at all which is good, but the time is going to change soon and I need her to be able to stay awake past dinner.

Anyway, I was on my own from 8 o’clock on and it was a pretty good time for me. I decided not to do any of the things that I needed to get done save for emptying the dishwasher and putting away a load of laundry. Instead I sat at the computer goofing off, painted my toenails, did a thorough face wash including a mask, and pretty much enjoyed the silence. I actually really like being alone in the evening every once in a while though come 10:30 I start hearing every little noise.

Man the fog is taking it’s sweet time to lift! But it’s past 8:30am and that’s plenty late to still be sitting in my lounging clothes. One more computer thing and then I’ll start my morning business. We have a lovely day of no plans other than one dance class for only one kid and I’m not the parent who will be driving. Should be a good day for lessons- and caffeine.

I hate when it’s cold in the morning and hot in the afternoon - I’m inside a climate-controlled office, so it doesn’t matter much, but poor Gillian ends up either freezing or boiling for half the day.
