Seeking Mickey

By Tara Zandra | October 11, 2010

I want to get these details down so I don’t forget. Three weeks ago, Chris and I, along with Chris’s brother and his girlfriend, did a scavenger hunt at Disneyland. Not just Disneyland, but Downtown Disney, California Adventure, and all 3 hotels. It was an official event sponsored by D23, which is Disney’s official fan club.

We arrived at the hotel at 7:00am for check-in. The event didn’t start until 8:45am but there were a lot of teams so we opted to be there early. After we checked in the four of pretty much killed time until we could start. Every team was given a colored square that was one of three colors and that determined the starting location. Our team was to start inside Disneyland which I feel was a good thing.

We had an question book which had 330 questions. There were about 300 1-point questions, 20 5-point questions, and 10 10-point questions. The question booklet was broken up into 4 zones; Disneyland, California Adventure, Downtown Disney/Grand Californian Hotel, and Disneyland Hotel/Paradise Pier Hotel. The 1-pointers could be very simple such as writing down the weight of an Autopia car which was posted on a sign at one of the hotels. Many of them required you just to look at a sign and copy something down, but you had to get to the sign. I don’t feel a lot of them were pure trivia that you would necessarily know off the top of your head but prior Disney/Disneyland knowledge certainly helped in knowing where to look.

The 5-point questions were a bit more involved. One I remember had us go to three different ice cream places inside Disneyland and write down a price of a specific frozen treat. The final answer would be the total cost of all three items.

The 10-point ones were very involved. Here’s an example of one I remember, but paraphrased.
Go to Aladdin’s Oasis and see what animal adorns the sign.
What attraction features a piece of furniture with this animal (hint: It’s a throne).
What animal is sitting on that piece of furniture?
Go to the attraction that features that animal prominently.
What color is the vehicle out front?

All that and the answer is simply white as the vehicle is the hearse in front of the Haunted Mansion. The three places mentioned are in three different lands so the 10-pointers definitely could take some time.

So we started at 8:45am and had to turn in our answer booklets, oh they were all write-in answers, no multiple choice, at 2:00pm sharp. For every minute late, they would deduct 1-point.

Now, we didn’t win nor did we crack the top 50. But we were number 67 out of around 500 teams and I don’t feel bad about that at all. It was definitely a fun way to spend a day. The one downside was the heat. It was 111 degrees in Anaheim and it just dragged us down. We all did our best to ignore the heat and I think we did a pretty good job, but by the end, I was definitely done. I think I was done 45-minutes before we were done but I kept myself going with the knowledge that we were making our way back to an air-conditioned room.

Anyway, I really hope Disney does it again because it really was a lot of fun and now that we know what to expect, I think we could do even better next time.
