Celebrate good times, come on!

By Tara Zandra | May 29, 2010

Today was my birthday weekend kick-off! It started just as I like with the house to myself. I did my yoga, had some hot tea while I read blogs then worked out before jumping in the shower. We left the house a little later than I wanted, but were finally on the road around 10. Our first stop was Compartes Chocolatier. It’s a gourmet chocolate shop that we saw featured on Chef vs. City on Food Network a couple months ago. We’ve had the website bookmarked since then and my birthday seemed like a great reason to finally go there! The four of us put together our own assortment box and ended up with various chocolates. I’ve forgotten all that we picked but I know I chose a Raspberry Peppercorn Truffle, a chocolate covered pretzle (that’s a fav. treat of mine), a Mexican Hot Chocolate Truffle, some coconut chocolate confection, and I think something else. We sat down and each had one chocolate right then and brought the rest home. Let me just say, of what I’ve had, we are oh so going back to do this again. They are amazing!

Next we went to a mall because I wanted to purchase a sewing patterns book and Amazon isn’t shipping for a few months and none of the Barnes and Nobles near us have it in stock. I haven’t been to this mall in ages and ages so we took the time to look around. They had a wonderful toy store that we had a lot of fun in. I was able to get Daisy a Holztiger wooden animal for her fairy house. We’ve never seen them in a store, only online so it was a nice treat. I also went into a shop and bought a dress. I wear jeans and t-shirts pretty much every day of my life with very rare exceptions. I’ve been planning for awhile to start buying dresses for summer. I’ll admit that the reason I don’t wear dresses is because I feel extremely self-conscious in them. But I’m desperately trying to shed that. Anyway, it’s a lovely maxi-dress with tons of print, which is different for me. Anyway, enough of that.

After the mall we headed to the Cheese Shop of Beverly Hills. I like chocolate okay, but I LOVE cheese. Cheese is the reason I’m not vegan- I can live without milk and eggs, but I’m not strong enough to give up cheese. Sadly, the shop was tiny and crowded and extremely overwhelming. There were zero signs to explain anything and it wasn’t what we were looking for. I was envisioning a shop like the olive oil place we went to in Sacramento last year. The owner greeted us when we walked in, explained olive oil to us, set up a tasting and helped us pick out some good stuff. The cheese shop however would probably be fabulous if you knew exactly what you wanted, but not so good on a Saturday when you’re really just there for “lots of different cheese.” So we left and then had a really good lunch at Sharkeys. Well, my tacos and Chris’s burritos, and the rice, was all pretty bland. But the salsas really, really make up for that. Tabitha’s burrito was really good too and Daisy had quesadillas so she simply dipped in more salsa. Seriously, the salsas were good enough, that will go back just for those.

Next we went to Whole Foods because we still really wanted cheese! We chose 5 different kinds (a gouda, 2 sheep’s milk, one goat’s milk, and a bleu), plus 2 breads, and 2 crackers, and I hit up the olive bar. Can you say, dinner?!

Home, relaxing, fabulous dinner, Lucy episods, kids to bed and Chris is currently in line at a gourmet truck to end the evening. I am so going to need to step up the workout tomorrow morning!

Anyway, this was such a wonderful day and even when we changed up plans and were stuck in traffic, I still say this was the best possible way to spend my last Saturday at age 35.

Tomorrow brings more fun!!
