I’ve been meaning to mention forever about a new show on USA Network called “Psych.” You see it was created and is being written by a friend of mine, Steve Franks who long time readers will know I’ve mentioned as the lead singer of The Friendly Indians (the band of our friends that Chris and I go see play in clubs whenever we get the chance). In fact, The Friendly Indians do the theme song for the show. In any case, I think you should watch the show once to support my friend’s career. But I think you should season pass it on your Tivo because it is hilarious. I expected to like the show, I didn’t expect to absolutely love it. James Roday plays the lead character and he is fabulous in this role. He plays it just right and is a pleasure to watch.

Seriously. Funny show. Give it a try. Maybe take two episodes to really get a feel for it since the pilot has passed.

Basically the show is about Shawn Spencer who was drilled throughout his entire life by his detective father (Corbin Bernsen, did you know he collects snow globes?) to notice his surroundings down to the last minute detail. Because of this he has uncanny abilities to, well, notice every detail. He did not grow up to be a detective though because he has severe issues with his father and wants to be nothing like him. But he used this gift of his to phone tips in to the cops from time to time and collect rewards. Finally the cops decide the only way he could know this stuff is if he’s a criminal who’s been helping the criminals. They’re going to try him for a crime so he says he’s psychic and just following his visions. In the end, he does help solve a crime, the chief kind of believes he might be psychic but really just knows that he has great hunches. So he somehow convinces his friend to go into this private detecting agency with him and calls it “Psych.” The antagonist is played by Timothy Omundson who doesn’t for one minute believe this guy is psychic and would like nothing more than to lock him up for eternity.

Good stuff, I hope you enjoy.
